SS 420 stud bolts are martensitic stainless steel, usually containing about 12% to 14% chromium, a maximum of 0.15% carbon, and low nickel content. After quenching, they achieve high hardness (above Rockwell C 40), tensile strength ranges from 800 to 1000 MPa, and yield strength falls between 600 and 800 MPa. Elongation is modest, around 10% to 20%. They show good wear resistance and moderate corrosion resistance in mild environments. Heat treatment through quench and temper optimizes strength. These mechanical properties make SS 420 suitable for applications requiring hardness, load-bearing, and resistance to mild corrosion in bolted assemblies.
