Stainless Steel 348 (UNS S34800) is an austenitic alloy that is stabilized with niobium and tantalum, containing 17–19% chromium, 9–13% nickel, ≤0.08% carbon, up to 2% manganese, ≤0.75% silicon, along with trace amounts of cobalt and niobium (0–1%) to prevent sensitization. In its annealed state, it boasts a tensile strength of 620–655 MPa, a yield strength of around 240–275 MPa, an elongation of approximately 45%, and a Rockwell B hardness of about 83–85. Its toughness is highlighted by impact values of 120–160 J (Izod) and 160 J (Charpy). With an elastic modulus of around 200 GPa and impressive thermal stability up to about 870 °C, SS 348 strikes a balance between strength, ductility, and high-temperature resilience.
