ER317L has 18–20% chromium, 13–15% nickel, 3–4% molybdenum, and trace carbon (<0.03%) for enhanced pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. The mechanical properties are tensile strength ≥80 ksi, yield strength ≥60 ksi, and elongation ≥30%. Low carbon in it avoids carbide precipitation, allowing it to have excellent corrosion resistance in weld areas. The flux blend gives good arc flow properties, good slag removal, and excellent bead appearance. ER317L welds are resistant to strengths and toughness in even severe environments with chlorides or in strong oxidizers, so it is perfect for harsh service conditions.
