AWS Class ER309 contains 22–24% chromium, 12–15% nickel, and 0.25% carbon, while ER309L has a reduced carbon content of ≤0.03%. Both exhibit tensile strength between 550–700 MPa, yield strength from 260–380 MPa, and elongation of 35–50%. The low carbon in ER309L prevents chromium carbide precipitation, enhancing intergranular corrosion resistance. Silicon (0.5–1%) and manganese (1–2%) ensure stable arc performance and good fluidity. Charpy toughness at ambient temperature is around 60 J. These precise compositions support sound fusion and properties when welding stainless to carbon or alloy steels.
