Stainless Steel 416 Fasteners are a type of martensitic stainless steel that stands out for its impressive machinability, decent corrosion resistance, and solid mechanical strength. Often hailed as one of the easiest stainless steel grades to machine, SS 416 is a go-to choice for crafting precision fasteners that need tight tolerances and smooth finishes. These fasteners shine in high-volume production settings and are commonly used in situations where fabrication ease, strength, and moderate corrosion resistance are key. You’ll often find Stainless Steel 416 fasteners in automotive parts, industrial machinery, and equipment that requires regular assembly or disassembly.
When it comes to its chemical makeup, Stainless Steel 416 contains 12–14% chromium and a maximum of 0.15% carbon, with added sulfur to enhance machinability. It might also have trace amounts of manganese, silicon, and phosphorus. The sulfur helps with machining but does slightly compromise corrosion resistance compared to other stainless steels. SS 416 can be heat-treated to boost its strength and hardness, typically achieving a tensile strength of around 550–700 MPa and a Rockwell hardness of up to 40 HRC. While it’s not the best choice for marine or highly corrosive environments, it performs admirably in dry or mildly corrosive conditions.
